What I Ate Wednesday: Honolulu

This WIAW is jam-packed full of food and physical activity. When I’m physically active, I become ridiculously hungry and also need a large amount of sleep. Here’s what one of my active days recently looked like.

8:00 AM: Breakfast

I had an iced coffee with stevia and a smoothie (nettle leaf iced tea, tart cherry juice, lemon juice, acai powder, green super food powder, ice, chia seeds).

9:00 AM: Yoga

I taught a Morning Flow yoga class at Yogaloha (if you’d like to come to one of my classes check the October schedule here). It was my first time teaching this class and I loved it!

10:30 AM: More Yoga!

I took the next class, which was CORE Yoga. Since the Morning Flow class was small, I practiced along while I taught; so after this second class my muscles were starting to feel sore and I was starving!

12 Noon: Snack

I wanted to cook for lunch, so first I quickly peeled and ate an organic carrot to stave off that hangry feeling.

We’ve eaten so many fresh, local veggies lately thanks to our Ma’o Organic Farms box. I promise to write a full post about it soon! We got a ton of dandelion greens this week, so I chopped up a whole head for lunch.

I sautéed the greens with olive oil, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, black pepper and Maui onion salt.

12:30 PM: Lunch

We had some leftover foccacia bread, so I toasted that up with butter. I scrambled the greens with three eggs with half a cup of cottage cheese. I know that might sound strange, but honestly it just mixes in with the eggs and you can’t even tell the cheese is in there. Kiyo hates cottage cheese and he didn’t even realize I’d fed it to him! Cottage cheese is great to add to your diet because it has probiotics and is super low in fat and sugar, and high in protein. I ate my eggs with mayonnaise and ketchup (yes, both, it is delicious!).

1:30 PM: Dessert & Barbels

I had a small handful of chocolate chips (not all of what’s pictured here!). After answering some emails I did my quick barbel routine: 3 sets with 8 reps of squats, overhead presses, and one set of dead lifts. I’ve gotten up to 25 pounds but my arms were shaking like crazy by the end!

3:00 PM: Hiking

Kiyo, Aaron and I hiked Diamond Head, which I haven’t done in years. They’ve made some improvements and updates to the trail.

My least favorite part of this 1.5 mile loop is the tunnels. I get claustrophobic and ended up running this 225-foot stretch!

The trail gains 560 feet, some of which are stairs. This hike is really the best workout because it’s quick (we were done in about an hour) and this part is a not-optional stationary stair-master.

After even more stairs and tunnels, you arrive at a bunker and are greeted with a glmpse of the view. You have to climb out through this small opening.

The 360-degree views are totally worth the hike! Here is Waikiki and downtown Honolulu…

This is looking South…

This is Manoa and Kaimuki to the North (the East side and North Shore are on the other side of those mountains)…

Inside of Diamond Head crater

This is facing East and the inside of Diamond Head crater. You can see Koko Head in the distance and Portlock sticking out on the right.

The color of the ocean from up here always awes me, it’s so gorgeous!

More stairs, ugh! We were all pretty sweaty by the time we got back to the car.

4:30 PM Snacks

I was so hungry again after our hike! I just grabbed whatever we had around that was ready-to-eat, and that turned out to be salami slices…

…and a yummy Trader Joe’s strawberry pop tart. Sadly, we do not have Trader Joe’s in Hawaii so this was from Seattle. I bought this box without reading the back and it turns out one pop tart has 16 grams of sugar, which is SO much! Way too much: almost three-quarters of my recommended daily intake (whoops).

6:00 PM: Dinner

We were all starving so we picked up takeout from Siam Palace, a really good (but slightly expensive) Thai restaurant nearby. This picture for some reason turned out looking really unappetizing, but the food was delicious. This is red curry over sticky rice with chicken, herbs and bamboo shoots; pad see ew with chicken and broccoli; and spring rolls with cucumber, lettuce and fresh mint (lettuce and mint not pictured).

7:00 PM: Movie

In another recent WIAW I mentioned that I read “Gone Girl” in less than 2 days. Aaron, Kiyo and I went to see the movie. Of course, as always, I preferred the book but the movie was still really good. The screenplay was written by the author, which I’m sure helped a lot. Aaron hadn’t read the book and I heard him gasp a few times, so the suspense was effective!

I’ve been drinking Cascade Ice organic sparkling waters, so I snuck one into the movie to drink instead of sugary soda. I’m loving these beverages, all the flavors! Not pictured: Kiyo’s popcorn, which I definitely stole generous handfuls of.

Total estimated calories: 2,500
