My friend Danielle and I went out for a late, relaxed brunch at Hummus Kitchen a few weekends ago. They have four locations around Manhattan and we met at the one in Murray Hill. For $16, you get one beverage (we both had Turkish coffee), a brunch entrée and appetizers for the table. For only $4 more you can have unlimited brunch cocktails, which is an amazing deal, but neither of us felt like drinking so we passed.
I enjoyed all the appetizers but thought it was odd that we weren’t given pita bread for the eggplant dip. The chickpeas and stuffed grape leaves were especially delicious.
My shakshuka was disappointing; it tasted like uninspired pasta sauce with some unseasoned spinach and eggs thrown in; also, the eggs were a bit undercooked and I had to ask for the pita bread, which tasted store-bought. At least it looked nice! Danielle’s dish looked better, I thought: scrambled eggs with a side of cucumber / tomato salad, and potatoes. For the amount of food we got for $16 for brunch in New York City, I wasn’t too worried about it, but next time would rather just have the appetizers, that was definitely the star of the show!
