On our last morning in Santa Monica when I went to visit Lana in California, we ate at Huckleberry, a cute café that I had heard of due to its supposedly amazing maple bacon biscuits.
Huckleberry is owned and operated by husband and wife team Zoe Nathan and Josh Loeb. Both of them are local, born and raised in Santa Monica, and their goal was “to open a local artisan bakery and café where friends, family and enthusiastic food lovers come together to eat delicious homemade bread, pastries and savory food in a warm casual atmosphere.” Their small, inviting café accomplishes just that.
Everything served at the café is made on-site using quality and often local ingredients, including organic flour, Vahlrona chocolate and farmer’s market produce. The menu changes regularly with the seasons and on the baker’s whims; Lana and I eyed the baked goods behind the counter greedily.
Of course, we had to try one of the biscuits that had drawn us in to begin with. It was more like a dense scone than a biscuit, I thought. The sweet and salty flavor combination was great, and it was delicious, but I actually thought my entrée was the star of the show.
My dish was the cutely named “green eggs & ham,” with La Quercia prosciutto, pesto, and arugula on house made English muffin. Everything tasted so fresh and vibrant, it looked beautiful, and it felt filling yet healthy. I loved the rich pesto with the salty meat, the bitter greens and the soft homemade English muffin. The eggs of course tied it all together.
Lana had the breakfast porridge, with organic whole milk, golden raisins, maple syrup, walnuts, apples, & brown butter. We would definitely go back the next time we’re in town!
